HISTORY OF ROCK AND ROLL COURSE
I have created a 16 week course on the history of rock and roll covering music from the mid 1950's to the mid 1970's including topics such as: background on music that influenced Rock and Roll such as Blues, Doo Wop, Country, R&B, Rockabilly etc., British Blues, British Invasion, Stax, Motown, Atlantic, The Hippy movement and Psychedelic Rock, Progressive Rock and Jazz-Fusion. This course was created for Master degree music students (see pics. below) at Cornel School of Contemporary Music in Los Angeles. The course can be adapted to suit the needs of prospective schools and/or individuals.
I grew up in London UK during the 1960's and 1970's and have an expert knowledge of the music and culture from that period.
Here is what students who took the course said about it:
This class has helped me a lot. I didn't know anything about Beatles, Jimi Hendrix or Janis Joplin apart from their names and maybe a few big hits. Listening to the different Beatles albums, especially Sgt Pepper, has been extremely interesting and inspiring for my own compositions. Same with Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion. I didn't know ANYTHING about those genres and even though it wouldn't be on my 'chill out' playlist, I greatly enjoyed learning about the freedom and authenticity the composers brought to life through their compositions.
This was an interesting class for me and I believe every musician should know about the different periods and changes that the music has suffered to help them the understanding of their own music. For example, in my case, it inspired me a lot to write songs in different time signatures and to merge This class not only exposed me to music I haven't heard before but also taught me about the past. I also think it's very important for someone to know about their past in order to either follow the good examples or avoid the bad experiences others did. At the end, I am more creative because of this class. Besides, if you are a musician, you should be able to talk about music and the people who made it.
First of all, thank you for giving me this opportunity to learn about Rock and roll music history. I have learned a lot through this class about contemporary music history such as Motown, Progressive rock.... If I didn't take this class I wouldn't learn about this parts deeply. This class is really helpful and you always helped us to gave us like a guideline kindly. It was really great. If There will be second class. I would like to take the class.. Thank you again.
This class will definitely help in church service and praise, as a good understanding of music history will enhance music awareness and how it effects the people in general. we can design and implement a focused praise program and music to reach the diverse community of church goers.
Knowledge is power. I think that more someone knows about something the more power he has to make decisions and be creative. Some of the comments from students about the Funk and Blues RSS class
This class has helped me improve my reading abilities and it has also strengthened my desire to play with other musicians who I can learn from!
This class helped me to put different kinds of music and rhythms into its own category. Giving names to music I have been listening to helped me figure out the "right" sound in different styles of playing. I also got introduced to a lot of artists who have influenced the music we listen to today.
It has forced me to be more knowledgable with my solo's using specific scales at various tempos.
I learned a lot about rhythms. I tried various types of rhythms in each riff and chords. As a musician, I guess I moved one step forward in playing funk keyboard thanks to this class.
Its been a year since I've started playing the guitar, This class helped me improve so much that i have changed so much in rhythm reading and knowing the chords, playing with other musicians.
This class has helped me first of all learn exactly what a 12 bar blues progression is and how to play one. Secondly, being in this class has forced me to learn to play and actually read funk rythyms in music notation. I learned how to break down the rhythyms by methods such as clapping the rhythym before i even try to play it on guitar. Also using a slower tempo to start with then working my way up to normal speed has helped. I would like to say that my soloing has also improved from being in here but i feel like im still not at a competent level when it comes to that category but what i will say is that my fear of soloing in front of others is no longer so in that aspect i am greatly improved as opposed to before this class. Thank you for that.
It has helped me develop my grooves, rhythms, and timing. It has also helped me establish a good sense of what Blues is and how it should be played. My favorite part of the class was being able to play with my classmates.
